If you have been the lucky recipient of AARP's invitation to join, um, AARP--which landed in my mailbox on the exact day I turned 50--you might remember Jack Douglas, who hosted the classic 1950s travelogues Across the Seven Seas, I Search for Adventure, Golden Voyage and others. Shows like these were still limping along in the 60s, and I followed along breathlessly, desperate to trade the blasted middle school confines of Phoenix for--I don't know, anywhere--maybe Singapore, the Golden Pearl of the Orient.
I sometimes feel as if this blog is a late, Tucson-bound entry in the travel-adventure oeuvre, with my meager attempts to make Today's Tucson Mystery Location as scintillating as Douglas' Fun Fest in Florida or Jungle Town Amigos.
No matter. If you've been itching to know where that door-and-shadow shot came from, the photo of the Firestone Auto Supply & Service Store is your answer. The building still stands, on the southwest corner of 6th St and 6th Ave. In 2017 it's home to Let's Sweat fitness gym, so you'll have to trade your spinning tires for spinning classes, and an oil change while-u-wait is right out. But DPs will love the wrap-around windows.
