This is the bell tower at Mission San José de Tumacácori, just south of Tubac, and soon after this photo was taken those friendly clouds coalesced into a terrific thunderstorm. We high-tailed it to Soto's Outpost for a plate of chili con carne and a belated birthday celebration. We got their just as the mariachi band showed up, even though it was peak summer and there were few customers to fill the tables. There were three of them and they did a lovely rendition of Blue Bayou, but those three were all that was left of what used to be 30, and there were laments all around about how few of the youngsters were taking up the guitarron. But what is old often comes back around. The mission itself, located at Tumacácori National Historical Park, was once a deteriorating pile of adobe. Now it's a beautiful monument to the pioneering padres and a ready-made set. Duel in the Sun and Young Guns II were filmed here and it's a wonder that it hasn't been better utilized on the big screen.
